Who Am I?

Hi I'm Veera Raghavendra Chikka Expert in natural language processing and machine/deep learning. I define, develop and deploy deep learning and machine learning models on NLP/Text and Structural data. I love exploring different problems/usecases and solve using AI. I work in agile mode with any cross-functional team with ease.

I have received my PhD in Computer Science from International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad. Have published more than 10 research papers in reputed journals and conferences.

Senior Data Scientist at Optum Global Solutions (UHG), India
December 2018 – present

  • Led, developed and deployed SmartRFP, a machine learning tool that analyses RFP contract documents. Coordinated a cross-functional team of 12 members, including Data Scientists, Architect, Business Analysts, UI/UX developer, Deployment Engineering, and Scrum Master.
  • Led a team to develop and deploy an NLP toolkit to identify medical entities and relations in clinical docs.
  • Built AI Doctor, a transformer-based deep learning model, to predict disease through early detection of indicators from insurance claims.

Research Assistant for Hitachi R&D Bangalore at IIIT Hyderabad, India
January 2014 – December 2018

  • Worked on "Statistical Natural Language Processing: Information Extraction from Clinical Text".
  • Built machine learning models to extract medical and disease entities from discharge summaries.
  • Developed a hybrid deep learning approach for medical relation extraction.
  • Implemented a module in Apache cTAKES to extract severity and course relations of disease mention.
  • Experimented with various algorithms such as CRF, SVM, CNN, Bi-LSTM, Transformers and BERT.
